On Feb 4th, 2010 Shanghai tapped out of the contaminated Huangpu River source into a new raw water source in the Yangtze River. The new Qingchaosha Resevoir is on an island north of Shanghai city and is connected to the mainland via underwater pipes (below).
The reservoir opens to receive fresh water from the Yangtze during the day, and closes off to seawater by night. It is large enough water for the city for 68 days. Being in the Yangtze River estuary, however means that as sea levels rise so dose the threat the reservoir will be cut off from its source of fresh water.
