preparing the earth

Without the canals that drain it,
Suzhou would be a waterland. It was once so.
The surface of the earth has been worked hard;
Land was extracted from water by channels and defended by dikes
While seawalls made brackish waters sweet.

Once wetland, then rice polder, now city
The surface has been cast and re-cast.
Nothing is natural.
Everything has been and can be made anew.
